Mathematical aspects of ocean wave energy absorption

This book presents the mathematical aspects of ocean wave energy absorption in an accessible manner to the non-mathematicians. Some knowledge of linear algebra and complex numbers is, however, required. The book may seem to contain a lot of equations, but only so that the reader can follow the derivations closely and clearly. This makes it an enjoyable book to read.

About the Author
Michael Common is Emeritus Professor at the Graduate School of Environmental Studies, University of Strathclyde and a member of the editorial board of the journal Ecological Economics. He is highly respected both for his teaching and as author of numerous journal and book publications on the economics of the environment since 1973.

Sigrid Stagl is Lecturer in Ecological Economics at the School of Earth and Environment, University of Leeds. She is a member of the editorial board of the journal Environmental Values and is currently Vice-President of the European Society of Ecological Economics.

A well-written, very accessible survey of Calvin's life, thought and theology, this book is a must for individuals interested in cutting through the myths and the misinformation and getting to know this complex and brilliant Reformation prophet, priest, pastor and theologian. The Cambridge Companion prompted me to go back and re-read sections of Calvin's "Institutes" armed with new insights garnered from this excellent compendium. I highly recommend "The Cambridge Companion to John Calvin" and I know that I will go back to it again and again for study, preaching and just plain enjoyment.

More than a survey, less detail than in a good monograph...

The author covers a wide variety of detectors, and devotes some considerable amount of space to less standard detectors (e.g. blocked impurity band) which are hard to find in textbooks. The level is above a Physics Today or IEEE Spectrum exposition, but less than in a good monograph of the Semiconductors and Semimetals series type. Would be good for courses based primarily on describing detectors for astronomy or scientific instrumentation. However, does not give much coverage to HgCdTe, a workhorse in the 3-5 and 8-12 micron ranges, and does not cover some fairly standard descriptions (e.g. RoA product) of noise for such detectors. Also not very useful for photodiodes for telecom, and the descriptions of avalanche photodiodes and things like 1/f noise are skimpy at best. The author gets points for at least trying to cover readout issues and for often giving simple quantitative models describing the physics behind many types of detectors in a short readable format.
